Feeding
Physiology
Lactation Consultant Krystal
says, “It’s important to note that
at the breast, babies control
the milk 昀氀ow through their own
sucking rhythm. When switching
to a bottle, if the 昀氀ow is too fast,
they lose that control, and it can
feel overwhelming. This is why
昀氀ow rate matters especially in
combination‑feeding situations.”
Every baby has to coordinate three
things at the same time:
01 — Suck
02 — Swallow
03 — Breathe
This coordination isn’t completely automatic;
it develops over time. I’ve watched babies
work so hard to feed that they fall asleep
mid‑bottle—not because they’re full, but
because they’re exhausted.
When 昀氀ow matches their ability
→ Feeding is smooth
When it doesn’t
→ Babies choke, pull away from the bottle,
spit‑up, or get frustrated.
