Feeding Made Simple - Flipbook - Page 47
Takes bottle from
others, not mom.
Gulps the bottle but
calm at breast.
Frustrated at the
breast after bottle.
Baby finishes a bottle in
5 minutes but spends 30
minutes at the breast.
This is not rejection. This is biology.
Babies recognize feeding through scent,
rhythm, and 昀氀ow. When it feels di昀昀erent
from the breast, they may resist,
especially when they smell a mother’s
milk. So let another caregiver o昀昀er the
bottle 昀椀rst.
Your 昀氀ow is likely too fast.
Try switching to a slower 昀氀ow.
When the bottle 昀氀ow is too fast
compared to the breast, the baby will
get frustrated at the breast. So switch to
a slower 昀氀ow and do a paced feed.
Try doing paced bottle feeding—
baby upright, horizontal bottle, and
frequent pauses.
