Air Swallowing (Aerophagia): When babies
swallow air during feeding, it can lead to gas and
discomfort.
Failure to Thrive (FTT): Poor weight gain or
growth in infants, sometimes related to feeding
di昀케culties.
Burping: Helping a baby release swallowed air
during or after feeds.
Feeding Cues: Signs a baby is hungry, such as
rooting, sucking on hands, or becoming more alert.
Colic: Frequent, prolonged crying in an
otherwise healthy infant, often associated with
gas or feeding discomfort. Often described
as rule of 3’s‑ crying for more than 3 hours, for
more than 3 days of a week, for more than 3
weeks in a row.
GERD (Gastroesophageal Re昀氀ux Disease):
A more severe form of re昀氀ux that may
a昀昀ect feeding, growth, or cause signi昀椀cant
discomfort.
Colostrum: The 昀椀rst form of breast milk
produced after birth. It’s rich in antibodies and
nutrients, even though the volume is small.
Combination Feeding (Combo Feeding): Using
both breastfeeding and bottle feeding (formula
or expressed breast milk).
Doula: A trained professional who provides
physical, emotional, and educational support to
a mother before, during, and after childbirth.
Engorgement: Breast fullness and swelling
due to increased milk supply, which can make
feeding more di昀케cult.

Lactation Consultant (IBCLC): A healthcare
professional trained to support breastfeeding,
milk supply, and feeding challenges.
Latch: How a baby attaches to the breast or
bottle. A good latch allows e昀케cient feeding and
prevents discomfort.
Letdown (Milk Ejection Re昀氀ex): The release of
breast milk during breastfeeding, triggered by
hormones.
Mastitis: In昀氀ammation or infection of breast
tissue, often causing pain, redness, and fever.
Meconium: A newborn’s 昀椀rst stool—thick,
sticky, and dark green/black.
